Today I want to talk about something that genuinely changed how I take care of myself: making exercise a real and protected part of my weekly schedule.
I have learned over the years that treating my workouts like an important appointment is not just about staying fit. It is about making my physical and mental well-being a priority so I feel better equipped to handle life's ups and downs. For me, fitness has become one of the most consistent ways I take care of myself — and it shows up in how I feel in every other area of my life too.
Why Putting Fitness First Makes a Difference
There was a time when fitness was not my priority. Like a lot of people, I told myself I was too busy, too tired, and that I would "get around to it" eventually. But eventually does not really come unless we make it happen.
It was not until I went through one of the harder seasons of my life that I realized how much I needed that time to move, breathe, and focus on myself. Having a dedicated window each day to release stress and feel strong helped me feel steadier. Fitness did not just affect how I felt physically — it helped shift my mindset too. It gave me structure, purpose, and a way to care for myself that I had been missing.
I learned that when I prioritize my health, I show up better in every part of my life. Whether I am at home, teaching, or just going about my day, I feel more like myself because I have taken that time for me.
Treating Your Workout Like a Real Appointment
So how do we make sure workouts do not get lost in the shuffle of a busy week? The answer is simple but genuinely effective: treat each workout like an important appointment. Think of it the way you would a meeting or a commitment you would not cancel unless you really had to.
For me, I physically write my workouts into my calendar and block out that time. This way, even on the busiest days, I see my "fitness appointment" and it reminds me that it matters too. Here are a few things that have helped me protect that time.
Find the Right Time for You
Some people love early-morning workouts, while others do better later in the day. The key is finding a time that fits your real routine and sticking to it as much as possible. For me, mornings work best — getting my workout done early sets the tone for the whole day. But if evenings work better for you, that is completely valid. There is no right time. There is just your time.
Start with Small, Consistent Steps
If you are new to making fitness a priority, start small. Maybe it is a 30-minute session three times a week, then you build from there. It is not about doing everything at once. It is about creating a habit you can actually sustain. Consistency is what brings progress — both physically and in how you feel day to day.
Make It Something You Enjoy
The best way to stick to a workout routine is to make it something you genuinely look forward to. If you dread it, it is going to feel like a chore. For me, spin classes are my happy place — the music, the energy, that feeling when we are all in sync. Find what makes you feel alive, and it becomes so much easier to protect that time.
Plan for When Life Gets in the Way
Things come up. That is just life. When a busy day throws off my schedule, I try to have a backup plan — maybe a shorter workout at home, a quick walk outside, or a few minutes of stretching. The goal is to keep some momentum going, even when things are not perfect. A little flexibility is what helps you stay consistent over time.
Thinking About Your Future Self
One of the reasons I feel so strongly about prioritizing fitness now is that I think of it as an investment — not just in how I feel today, but in how I want to feel years from now. Exercise is not just about any particular goal. It is about building strength, energy, and the ability to enjoy life through all its different seasons.
Think about the version of yourself 10 or 20 years from now. What kind of energy do you want to have? How do you want to feel? That vision is part of what keeps me showing up for myself, and I want the same for you.
How Fitness Helps Me Manage Stress
Life can get overwhelming. We are all juggling work, relationships, responsibilities, and everything else that comes with being busy. For me, exercise is my reset. It is my way of releasing tension, clearing my head, and recharging before heading back into the day.
After a good workout, I feel like I can approach everything else with a clearer mind. When I skip it, I notice the difference — I carry more tension, feel more scattered, and have less patience for the things that matter. So if you have been feeling overwhelmed or just a little "off," I really encourage you to try treating your workout as a gift to yourself. That hour you spend moving — whether it is on the bike, on a mat, or on a walk — is time you are investing in your own well-being.
Make the Commitment and Keep Showing Up
The best time to start is now. The sooner we make our health a consistent priority, the more we can feel the difference. Treating fitness like a real appointment is one of the most practical ways to build a habit that lasts.
Start small if you need to. Schedule it. Protect that time. And keep showing up — because you are worth showing up for.
