Which Athletic Gear Do You Swear By for Comfort and Performance?

One of the most common questions Paoli gets in class is what she wears to work out. Here is her honest, personal take on the gear she reaches for most — and how to find what works for you.

One of the questions I get most often from people in my spin and fitness classes is some version of: "Paoli, what do you wear when you work out?" And honestly, I love this question. Because I do think gear matters — not in a gear-obsessed way, but in a practical, you-are-going-to-be-moving-a-lot way.

When you are sweating, spinning, stretching, and doing your best in class, you want clothes that move with you rather than fight you. Over the years I have tried plenty of different brands, and two have consistently become my go-to: Fabletics and Under Armour. Here is what I like about each of them and what I usually look for when shopping for workout clothes.

What I Look for in Workout Gear

Before I get into specifics, here are the things I always think about when I am choosing athletic wear:

Comfort. If something feels restrictive or uncomfortable at rest, it is going to feel worse once you start moving. I want to be able to breathe, bend, and ride without thinking about what I am wearing.

Stays in place. Nothing breaks focus in a spin class faster than having to adjust your clothes every few minutes. I look for pieces that are designed to stay put through dynamic movement.

Moisture management. Workouts involve sweat, and fabric that pulls moisture away from the body tends to feel more comfortable throughout a session.

Durability. Workout clothes get washed a lot. I look for pieces that hold up over time without losing their shape or color.

Fit for my body. This is personal, but I prefer a high-waisted fit for leggings. It feels more supportive and stays in place better for me during high-energy classes.

Why I Like Fabletics

Fabletics has become a regular part of my wardrobe because the clothes feel good and look good at the same time — which is not always easy to find. Their leggings in particular tend to stay put through even my most active classes, which I appreciate. The fabric has a comfortable weight to it and moves easily without pulling or bunching.

I also like that they offer a wide variety of styles and colors. Some days I want something neutral and low-key; other days I want something a little more energetic. Fabletics tends to have options for both, which makes it easy to find something that fits the mood of the day.

Their sports bras have also worked well for me — supportive enough for higher-impact work while still being comfortable during lower-intensity movement.

Why I Like Under Armour

Under Armour is what I usually reach for when I need something that can handle a really intense session. Their tops in particular tend to feel lightweight and breathable even when the workout is demanding, which matters a lot during HIIT or a tough spin class.

I have washed many of my Under Armour pieces more times than I can count, and they still look and feel the way they did when I bought them. That kind of durability is genuinely useful when something is part of your regular workout rotation.

Their high-impact sports bras are another standout for me. Good support is not optional — it is functional — and theirs have consistently delivered that without being uncomfortable to wear for a full session.

Their lightweight jackets and hoodies are also great for warming up before class or cooling down after. That kind of versatility gets a lot of use.

How to Choose Gear That Works for You

What works well for me may not be what works best for you, and that is completely fine. A few things worth thinking about when choosing workout gear:

Consider your primary workout type. High-impact cardio, strength training, yoga, and walking all have different demands. It helps to think about what you will actually be doing most when you are shopping.

Fit matters more than brand. Try things on if you can, or look for brands with good return policies when you are buying online. Something that fits and moves well is going to serve you far better than something with a familiar logo that does not quite feel right.

Start simple. You do not need a complete gear overhaul to get started. A couple of pieces that feel comfortable and hold up through regular washing is enough. You can always add more as you settle into your routine.

Budget thoughtfully. There are good options at a range of price points. Comfort and function matter more than cost. Invest where it makes sense for you, and do not feel pressure to spend more than your budget allows.

Comfort Helps You Show Up

At the end of the day, the best workout gear is whatever makes you feel ready to move. It does not have to be a specific brand or a particular style. It just has to feel comfortable, support what you are doing, and make you feel good in your body.

For me, that combination tends to come from Fabletics and Under Armour — but your answer might look completely different, and that is exactly how it should be. What matters is that you find what works for you and that it makes showing up a little easier.
