Today I want to talk about one of the simplest but most powerful things you can do for your fitness routine: hydration.
It might not sound as exciting as a tough spin class or a new workout, but trust me, it matters. Whether you are pushing through a workout, recovering after a challenging session, teaching back-to-back classes, or simply going about your day — hydration plays a real role in how your body feels and recovers.
For me, water has always been a go-to, but over the years I have learned that staying hydrated is not just about drinking more H2O. It is about being intentional with what I drink and when, especially as someone who is constantly active. Let me share what that looks like in my day and a few simple tips that have made a difference for me.
Why Hydration Matters for How You Feel
Even mild dehydration can affect how you feel during a workout. When your body does not have enough fluid, you may notice your energy dipping, your muscles feeling more tired, or your body having a harder time staying cool.
If you are sweating through one of my spin classes or pushing through a HIIT session, hydration is one of the things that helps you feel steadier and more comfortable. I have noticed a big difference in how I feel during workouts when I have been intentional about hydrating beforehand — my energy feels more stable, I feel more prepared, and I recover more smoothly afterward.
Hydration is not just about quenching your thirst. It is about supporting your body so it can show up for you.
How I Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day
For me, staying hydrated starts as soon as I wake up. I always keep a water bottle nearby and sip consistently all day. But plain water can get a little boring, so small habits, tea, and a couple of go-to products help me stay on track.
Water All Day
Water is my foundation, and I try to drink it throughout the day rather than waiting until I feel thirsty. I always have a bottle nearby — whether I am teaching, running errands, or relaxing at home. If plain water is not your thing, adding a slice of lemon, cucumber, or mint can make it a little more enjoyable.
Tea for a Cozy Boost
I am a big fan of tea, especially in the afternoon. It is a nice way to keep sipping on something warm and soothing. Herbal teas are my favorite because they are caffeine-free and feel like a calming little reset in the middle of a busy day.
AminoMode During and After Workouts
During and after my classes and workouts — especially intense spin sessions — I often sip on AminoMode from 3D Labs Nutrition. I like mixing one to two scoops into my water and using it as part of my workout routine. It tastes great, makes it easy to keep sipping, and helps me stay consistent with hydration when I am moving from class to class.
HydraMode for Extra Support
When I know I need an extra hydration boost — like after multiple back-to-back classes or on a really hot day — I may reach for HydraMode instead. AminoMode is more amino-focused, while HydraMode is my go-to when I want more electrolyte-focused hydration support after a heavier sweat day.
Why Hydration Matters After Your Workout Too
Staying hydrated is not just about how you feel during a workout — it also matters afterward. Your body needs fluid to support recovery, maintain energy, and help you feel ready for whatever comes next.
When I was first starting out, I did not pay much attention to how much water I was drinking after class, and I felt it. I felt more sluggish, more sore, and slower to bounce back. Now I make it a point to keep hydrating after every workout, and the difference in how my body feels has been noticeable.
How to Know If You Are Drinking Enough
Not sure if you are staying hydrated? Here are a few simple things to pay attention to.
Listen to Your Thirst
If you are feeling thirsty, your body is already asking for more fluid. Try sipping water consistently throughout the day rather than waiting until you are really thirsty.
Check the Color
A simple way to gauge your hydration: light yellow is generally a good sign. Darker color may mean it is time to drink a little more water.
Build the Habit
If remembering to drink is the challenge, try keeping a water bottle where you can always see it, setting reminders on your phone, or using an app. Sometimes it really is just about building the habit until it feels automatic.
My Hydration Routine on Active Days
Here is a simple look at how I approach hydration on a typical active day.
Morning: I start with a big glass of water first thing, even before coffee.
Before class: I drink water leading up to my workout — sometimes mixed with AminoMode — so I feel prepared before I begin.
During class: I always bring my bottle and sip as needed throughout.
After class: As soon as class ends, I keep drinking. If I am using AminoMode or HydraMode that day, I finish my mix and then continue with water or tea through the afternoon.
Evening: I keep sipping water, and sometimes wind down with a chamomile tea.
Small Changes, Real Difference
Hydration is one of those things that is easy to overlook, but once you start making it a priority, you can feel the difference. You may feel more energized, recover more smoothly, and feel better prepared going into your workouts. And the best part? Staying hydrated can be simple — a good water bottle, a little planning, and a few options you actually enjoy can make it feel like a natural part of your day.
