Essential Gear for Your First Spinning Class: 7 Items

So you have decided to take your first spin class. Maybe even one of mine! Just kidding. No matter whose class you take, where, or why, I have found, in my years of teaching, there are some things just about every first-time spinning participant will want to have if possible.

Now, to be very honest, yes, these items, from shoes to water bottles, will make the class better, but I do not suggest everyone who has decided to take their very first spin class run out and get shoes or a gel seat before deciding they are going to make spin a part of their routine. When you decide to make spin a regular part of your routine, you’ll be glad you invested in these essentials. They will allow you to focus on your cycling and enjoy the class a whole lot more. With the right gear, you won't have to worry about being uncomfortable or not ready.

So, be sure to have as many of these suggestions as you can, and when the time is right, finish off the list as quickly as you can. You will thank me. I promise. Now, let's roll...

Spinning Class Essentials: Why Preparation Matters

Getting ready for your first spinning class is more than just showing up. It's key to know the importance of cycling gear. The right gear can and most likely will, make a world of difference in your enjoyment and performance.

The Importance of Proper Gear

The right gear changes your workout for the better. Guaranteed. Shoes that fit well, like in my case, mine from Tiem, help me keep good form. Clothes that are comfy and drinks to stay hydrated are also key. They will let you focus on the class without worries.

Good gear makes you perform better and lowers injury risk. With these spinning class essentials, you'll be set for a great ride.

Setting Yourself Up for Success

Getting ready for spinning class means being mentally ready and knowing what to expect. Being prepared will calm your nerves. Plan your outfit the night before. Prep your gym bag, Make sure you have packed your water, your towel, etc. These small details may seem trivial, but they will ease the nervousness that almost every first-time spinner experiences. I promise!

7 Items Every Newbie Needs for Their First Spinning Class

Starting a spinning class is exciting. If you have most, if not all of the following, you will get the most out of it. Here are the top suggestions...

Proper Spin Shoes

Good cycling shoes are a must. The best spinning shoes, like those from Tiem, keep your feet on the pedals. They make you safer and help you pedal better. SPD-compatible shoes are great for intense workouts.

Large Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is key during a workout. I always have my water bottle with me. Personally, I add flavored aminos to mine to aid with my endurance and recovery, but no matter what, water is a must. A 24-ounce bottle keeps me drinking water easily. An insulated bottle keeps my drink cold too.

Comfortable Workout Clothes

The right clothes make a big difference. I wear tops and leggings that wick away sweat and let me move freely. These clothes keep me comfy and focused on my workout.

Fitness Tracker or Smartwatch

A heart rate monitor is important for tracking your effort. It's not required for that first class, but if you decide to stick with it, you will love the added motivation and always know how hard you're working. You have many choices for such a monitor. I prefer my Apple Watch as the amount of information I get is unmatched, not just during class, but all day long. Tracking my calorie burn, heart rate, distance, etc helps me set goals and stay on track.

Gel Seat Cushion

A gel seat cushion makes long rides more comfortable. Again, it's not a must-have for class #1 but it helps a lot. A padded seat makes the class better.

Resistance Bands

Resistance bands are great for warming up or stretching after class. They help with flexibility and strength, which is good for cycling. These bands are very affordable and if you get a good set, they will become your favorite at-home workout tool as well.

Sweat-Wicking Towel

You're going to sweat. I can promise you this as well. A sweat-wicking towel is a must for class. It keeps you dry and comfortable. A light, quick-drying towel helps you stay focused and dry. As a little note, I buy these in packs...and I always have at least two in my bag. Wait...you will understand.

As You Can See

Getting ready for your first spinning class is probably a really good idea. These items can, and will, really change your class enjoyment and workout level.
