My Secrets to Staying Motivated and Achieving Long-Term Fitness Success
Ok, all my fellow fitness fanatics, today we are going to get really REAL! Sit down, get ready...I'm about to let you in on some secrets, and the first one is a big one. Ready? Staying motivated isn’t always easy! Yes, there, I said it. Even as a fitness instructor, I have days when I don’t feel like working out or teaching a class. But over the years, I’ve learned a few tricks that help me keep showing up, even when the motivation is low. So, since I have already shared the biggest secret, I figured why not also share my secret strategies for staying motivated too. I personally think the following "tricks" are the secret sauce to achieving your fitness goals and living your healthiest life. But remember, TOP SECRET! 😉
1. Start with Your "Why"
Whenever I feel like skipping a workout, I ask myself one question: “Why did I start this journey in the first place?” For me, fitness started as a lifeline during one of the darkest periods of my life. It was my way of finding strength, healing, and reclaiming control. Remembering that “why” keeps me grounded and focused.
What’s your “why”? Maybe it’s to have more energy for your kids, feel confident in your own skin, or improve your health. Write it down, put it somewhere you’ll see it often, and let it remind you of why this journey matters to you.
2. Make It Fun
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that if your workouts feel like a chore, you won’t stick with them. That’s why I encourage you to find activities you genuinely enjoy. For me, it’s spin classes (of course) and group fitness sessions. I thrive on the energy of the music, the community, and the challenge.
Not a fan of spin? That’s okay! Try different workouts until you find something that lights you up—whether it’s yoga, dancing, hiking, or weightlifting. The key is to move your body in a way that feels good to you.
3. Set Realistic Goals
We all love a big, audacious goal, but sometimes they can feel overwhelming. Instead, focus on setting smaller, more realistic goals that you can actually achieve. For example, instead of saying, “I want to lose 50 pounds,” aim for, “I want to work out three times a week.” Celebrate each milestone along the way, and before you know it, you’ll be crushing those bigger goals.
4. Make It a Non-Negotiable
Here’s the thing: you don’t find time for fitness; you make time. Treat your workouts like unbreakable appointments. I schedule my workouts just like I schedule my classes, meetings, or appointments. Once they’re on my calendar, there’s no backing out.
Pro tip: Morning workouts are the best way to guarantee you won’t skip. Knock it out first thing, and you’ll feel accomplished for the rest of the day.
5. Mix It Up
Doing the same workout over and over can get boring fast. That’s why I’m a big fan of switching things up. Some days, I hit the bike for a spin class; other days, I lift weights, do yoga, or go for a walk on the beach. Not only does this keep things interesting, but it also challenges your body in new ways, helping you avoid plateaus.
If you’re feeling stuck, try something new. Take a dance class, try a virtual workout, or explore outdoor activities like hiking or paddleboarding. You never know—you might discover a new favorite!
6. Build a Support System
Having a community of people who support your goals can make all the difference. I’ve seen this firsthand in my group fitness classes—there’s something magical about sweating it out together, cheering each other on, and sharing in each other’s successes.
If you don’t already have a fitness tribe, find one! Join a local class, invite a friend to work out with you, or connect with like-minded people online. Accountability and encouragement go a long way in keeping you motivated.
7. Reward Yourself
Who doesn’t love a little reward? When you hit a milestone or stick to your routine for a set period, treat yourself to something special. It could be a new pair of leggings, a healthy smoothie, or even a guilt-free rest day.
For me, the reward is often the post-workout feeling—knowing I’ve done something good for my body and mind. But let’s be honest, a new pair of cycling shoes or a fun workout top never hurts either!
8. Focus on How You Feel, Not Just How You Look
It’s easy to get caught up in the physical results of fitness, but the mental and emotional benefits are just as important. Exercise helps me manage stress, boost my mood, and sleep better. When I focus on how workouts make me feel rather than how I look, it’s so much easier to stay motivated.
9. Plan for Setbacks
Let’s face it—life happens. You’ll have days (or weeks) where things don’t go as planned. And that’s okay! What matters is how you bounce back. If you miss a workout, don’t beat yourself up. Just get back on track the next day. Progress, not perfection, is the goal.
10. Celebrate the Journey
This is the most important tip of all: enjoy the process. Fitness isn’t a destination; it’s a lifelong journey. Celebrate every small victory, from showing up to class to finishing a tough workout. Be proud of the effort you’re putting in and remember that every step forward counts.
My Final Thoughts: Enjoy the Journey
Staying motivated takes work, but it’s so worth it. When you commit to your fitness journey, you’re not just transforming your body—you’re strengthening your mind, boosting your confidence, and improving your quality of life.
